Mount Mukabaki

This post is also available in: 日本語 한국어 简体中文 繁體中文

Mount Mukabaki (809 m) forms the middle of a ring dike surrounding a massive granitic block featuring Mount Okue. The ring dike, one of the largest in Japan, runs for about 30 km.

The mountain consists of two peaks, known as Odake (west peak) and Medake (east peak). Its name is said to derive from its silhouette, which looks like mukabaki, a deer-skin legging worn by samurai warriors. From the mountaintop, climbers can enjoy the sweeping view of Nobeoka city and Sea of Hyuga. The two falls of Mukabaki (Yahazu and Nunobiki falls) drop for 77m and are selected as one of the 100 Most Beautiful Falls in Japan.

The trail is accessible within 25 minutes from Nobeoka Station, and the route from Mukabaki Shrine to Odake Peak takes about 2.5 hours.
