Shimanoura Area

This post is also available in: 日本語 한국어 简体中文 繁體中文

Shimanoura is a remote island of 15.5km circumference on the Sea of Hyuga off Nobeoka City. 6km to the northeast of Uraki Port, you can reach the island within 10 minutes by the speedboat. The island has been known for its netting fishery and once was called as the “island of jumping sardines”. It is located in the Nippo Kaigan Quasi-national Park, and the view of rock reef of various sizes and sea caves is simply breathtaking. Inside the sea are some 100 different types of table reefs including the world’s largest community of disc corals and gracefully swimming tropical fish, which make the area as one popular dive site. On the island, the nice walking trail has been built in Mt. Tonba (altitude: 185.3m). Visitors can take a pleasant walk to the scattering of 33 statues of Kannon Goddess and casually trek along the Rhododendron Dilatatum Azalea Road during the spring. Or, you can stroll down in the town to meet our community of friendly cats.
