Mt. Okure is for experienced climbers, and guided trekking is recommended for beginners. Other famous peaks are the steep-ridged Mt. Hiei, Mt. Hokodake, the locally popular Mt. Mukabaki, and Mt. Enodake, which is remembered as the mountain that the famous Saigo Takamori crossed to escape to Kagoshima from the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877.
